Equal Opportunities
Newtown Primary School
Equal Opportunities Policy
At Newtown Primary School our aim is to provide equality of opportunity for all children to participate in every aspect of school life, paying due regard to health and safety and pupil's age, aptitude and ability.
- Newtown recognises that individuals are unique and have differing needs. We are committed to equality of opportunities for all pupils irrespective of gender, race or disability.
- Newtown recognises that discrimination, whether open or masked, can lead to inequality of educational opportunity and therefore strives to ensure that the potential of all pupils is maximised. We believe that low expectation and under -achievement mitigates against pupils and we therefore set high standards for everyone.
- Newtown recognises that open discrimination in its organisation, discipline, educational options and choices is illegal under the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, the Race relations Act 1976 and as amended by the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and the SEN and Disability Act 2001. We therefore follow the spirit as well as the letter of the law.
- Newtown recognises its responsibility to help people identify, address and counter discriminatory attitudes and behaviour, through appropriate teaching and learning and information.
- Newtown expects all members of staff and governors to share the commitment to equality of opportunity, ensuring that all pupils have a full range of educational opportunities in accordance with the National Curriculum and the Local Education Authority's policies and guidance.
- Newtown confirms its commitment to equality of opportunity in every curriculum subject policy.
