Newtown C.E. (Voluntary Controlled) Primary School

Policy statements which have been agreed by all the teaching staff - for Physical Education lessons


Clothing: all children will need a change of clothing for P.E. lessons. A t-shirt and shorts, or a leotard should be worn indoors. A t-shirt and shorts should be worn outside, with an extra top and track suit trousers on cold days.

Footwear: all children will be bare foot for gymnastics and dance. Plimsolls or trainers should be worn for playground and field games lessons.

No football boots should be worn in games lessons.

Jewellery: no jewellery should be worn in P.E. lessons. If children have pierced ears the earrings should be removed for P.E. lessons. If the piercing has not healed, the earring should be covered by a plaster, provided by the parent. If watches are worn to school they should be removed for P.E. lessons and remain the child's responsibility.

P.E. Bags: all P.E. kit should be brought to school in a named P.E. bag - not a rucksack or holdall. These bags should be placed in the area designated for each class.

Hair: long hair should be tied back. An elastic band will be provided if children forget.

Glasses: if possible glasses should be removed before P.E. lessons and placed in the child's drawer. If they need to be worn they should be secured with a band behind the head.

Getting from the classroom to the gym (hall), field and playground: children will change in the classroom and then wear shoes and outer clothing, if necessary to walk to the teaching area. These will be placed at the far end of the hall at the beginning of the lessons.

Behaviour: behaviour in P.E. lessons fall in line with the school behaviour policy including passports.

Location of resources: resources are stored in the indoor store. Please try to keep these resources tidy and count them in and out at each end of the lesson. Staff should collect and return equipment at appropriate times before and after the lesson. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT ENTER THE P.E. STORE.

Children who do not bring kit: in KS1 children who do not bring kit will take part wearing vest and pants.

KS2 children will be given a note to take home if they do not bring kit, and will be given kit so that they participate in the lesson.

Staff: should always dress appropriately and wear soft shoes or bare feet inside.

Injuries: if an accident takes place in the gym (hall), on the playground or on the field, the class should sit down and a non-teaching assistant sent for. The normal first aid procedures detailed in the Health and Safety policy should be followed. This should include recording details of the accident in the appropriate document.

Asthmatics: staff should be able to gain access to inhalers in an emergency.
