P.S.E. Policy
NEWTOWN C.E. (CONTROLLED) PRIMARY SCHOOL
P.S.E. Policy
PHILOSOPHY
At Newtown Primary School we support the ideals set out in Section 1
of the Education Reform Act 1988 that require schools to:
'provide a broad and balanced curriculum which:
a) promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental
and physical development of pupils at the school
and of society;
b) prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities
and experiences of adult life.'
N.C.C. (1990) Curriculum Guidance 3 - The Whole Curriculum
We believe that pupils need to develop a range of personal and social skills to enable them to become confident, interact effectively with others and make choices about their lifestyles. These skills will help them to become well adjusted, happy people; able to reach their potential and so contribute to society.
To ensure this, pupils need opportunities to experience a range of planned, progressive and developmental activities. We will provide role models for our children by having a consistent approach to P.S.E. A secure and caring school environment and a sensitive approach will support this.
AIMS
Through personal and social education we aim to develop confident pupils, aware of their own self worth and able to recognise their personal skills and qualities. To ensure this pupils will be given the opportunities to:
* express and manage their feelings
* develop skills to help them manage change
* allow them to make informed decisions
* learn where to go for help when appropriate
* take responsibility for themselves and their actions and to
behave in a responsible way towards others
* learn to respect and value other people and their points of
view, regardless of race, disability, culture, or religion
* develop an enquiring mind
* develop a sense of independence
How will we achieve our aims?
We will provide varied learning opportunities for pupils to encourage maximum involvement. To ensure this personal and social education will be taught in a variety of ways.
Where appropriate P.S.E. will be integrated into topic work. However, some aspects will be taught as separate lessons or mini topics in order to ensure coverage. Many of the skills we would wish to develop are common to other areas of the primary Curriculum. Playtimes and social interaction during the course of the day may also provide opportunities to raise issues.
Our behaviour policy also reinforces our P.S.E. aims.
P.S.E. requires a wide variety of approaches such as circle time, parachute activities, games, role play discussions and problem solving.
Staff Development
All staff will know of the policy and be given the opportunity to develop the confidence to implement P.S.E. Staff will be updated regularly about new ideas, resources and legislation. This will occur during staff meetings, with the guidance amended accordingly. Training
is also offered through the staff Inset Directory.
Clear lines of communication are vital, especially when incidents may be affecting certain children. Updated files will be kept in the staff room on both sites where all appropriate information will be found. All staff will ensure that they check the file regularly.
