Oil/ Fuel Depot Info & Nuclear Sub

I met with a representative from Hampshire County Council at the beginning of the Summer Holidays 2009 to discuss what would arise in case of an emergency with the Oil/ Fuel Depot near Parham Road. Each year, I have a commitment to sending out a reminder to parents. In essence the information issued is the same as that issued to households in the vicinity if there should ever be an emergency. This would be to remain inside the school building, evacuate children from the very end classrooms to the hall keeping windows closed to avoid the pollution and to listen to the local media and police for further advice.

On any visit of a nuclear sub to Portsmouth the school is issued with medication to be administered in the very rare occurrence of an incident involving a radiation hazard.

May I also remind parents that we hold keys to Christ Church in case of ever needing to evacuate the school building for any length of time in case of any other emergencies such as a bomb alert. We would liaise with the Police and would attempt to send a message to parents via the text service informing you of any actions that have needed to be taken.

Behaviour Policy

At the start of term, all pupils were briefed in an age appropriate manner about the Behaviour Policy, the Golden Rules and the positive rewards available. All pupils were made clear about the sanctions that take place should the Golden rules be broken. The Golden Rules are referred to in class and through the Assembly forum. I have copied the Golden rules below for your information.

THE GOLDEN RULES

WE KNOW OUR SCHOOL IS IMPORTANT

AND EVERYONE MATTERS.

RULE 1: We work hard and play sensibly.

(We don’t waste our own time or that of other people.)

RULE 2: We are gentle and kind.

(We don’t hurt others.)

RULE 3: We listen and think.

(We don’t interrupt.)

RULE 4: We are polite and helpful

(We don’t hurt anybody’s feelings.)

RULE 5: We are honest and truthful.

(We don’t cover up the truth or tell lies.)

RULE 6: We look after things and keep ourselves safe.

(We don’t waste or damage things.)

SMILE AND BE HAPPY

A copy of the full behaviour policy is available from the school office and from the school website.

Presentation Policy

At Newtown we believe that children should take pride in their work and feel good about what they have achieved and produced. As part of our School Improvement plan we are working hard to ensure children present work to the highest possible standard. The results from the start of term have been very encouraging.

Presentation expectations are split into KS1 and KS2. All classrooms will display these expectations and teachers will regularly remind the children what is expected of them. The expectations are for pieces of work that will be recorded in exercise books or folders

All pupils have started off in pencil. When teacher thinks a child is presenting well enough they are given a school pen. Y6 monitors will be selling pens for 20p.

We have encouraged pupils to follow the presentation policy with relevant Homework.

A full copy of the Presentation Policy will be available on the website shortly or from the school office.

Newtown to be used as a Polling Station for the General Election

I have received notice from Mr Peter Lister, the Deputy Returning Officer for the Borough of Gosport that they will require the school for polling purposes at the General Election. You will know that no date has been set for the General Election at present. The election will be held at any time leading up to the end of May 2010.

Staffing – Pregnancy Miss Scott

In the last newsletter I wrote that we had a pregnant member of staff. I would now like to confirm that it is Miss Scott, Class Teacher in the Foundation Stage. Would parents of children in her class be particularly vigilant regarding the illnesses listed in the last newsletter. We hope that Miss Scott will be able to teach near towards February Half term. An advert will be placed after Half Term to find a quality replacement to cover her maternity leave (the remainder of the academic year). I will write to parents of children in SR to update you once an appointment has been made.

Mrs Bates

Mrs Becky Bates has recently undergone a major operation and will be off work for a period of time. I am sure that you will join me in wishing her a speedy recovery. I know how many children benefit from her positive influence and wondered if there may be parents who would like to contribute to a card and gift. We’d aim to send something in the next few days. Please feel free to sign the card in the office and add anything to contribute to the gift and we’ll get it round to her.

Dinner Money and Other Payments

We have been receiving an increasing number of payments of dinner monies throughout the week. Please can we remind you that payments should be sent in on a Monday morning only in an envelope to the class teacher clearly marked with your child’s name and the amount enclosed. Cheques should be made payable to Newtown Primary School.

We would also ask that other monies, such as trip payments, be sent in with your child to be handed to their teacher in the morning rather than after school, this enables the teacher to register receipt of the money and send it to the office for banking.

Additionally, After School Club and Breakfast Club monies should also be sent in to the school office on a Monday morning. The monies are held in a secure location and given to Mrs Bates for recording and banking.  Thank you for your co-operation.
