Friends of Newtown Primary School

Friends began in the old Newtown School in Grove Avenue in approx. 1995. The aim of friends was to form a link with the local community by holding social events involving both children and friends of the school. The group began by holding events such as quiz nights, horse racing nights and an annual trip to London which later became a twice yearly trip. At these events a raffle would be held which began to raise funds for the children of the school.
Since the change in the way the budget is to be managed the friends have taken a much more prominent role in fund raising for the school. They have taken over the ordering of school uniform and of the selling of this. They also play a big part in the running of the summer fair.
The money raised by friends is used to buy items for the benefit of all children in the school. Members of staff are welcome to attend meetings to ask for money to buy things for their year group or curriculum area. Items bought by Friends include staging. The Junior playground gazebo, costumes for plays, Maths dictionaries and some musical instruments.
